This population based cohort study of young adult men (18-20 years old), includes 1068 men and was initiated in 2003, with the aim to investigate environmental and genetic parameters related to growth, bone development, fracture risk and body composition in young men.

All men have undergone extensive characterization, including measurements of anthropometrics, bone microstructure, bone geometry and density, muscle strength and body composition. Techniques used to accomplish this detailed phenotyping include Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), peripheral Computed Tomography (pQCT), high resolution CT (XtremeCT), and abdominal CT. All men have answered detailed questionnaires including questions concerning physical activity, smoking, dietary intake, diseases and medication, as well as socio-economic status. Data on self reported and X-ray verified fractures (incident and prevalent) has been collected. Detailed growth charts are also available on a large subsample of the cohort.

A five-year follow-up examination was performed, including 833 men, during 2008 and 2009. As of 2010, 35 scientific reports originating from the GOOD-study, have been published in high-ranking international scientific journals.
