Professor Hans Carlsten

Professor of Rheumatology since 2002 and director of Institute of Medicine since 2009. Principal investigator for a group of 10 people with focus on translational research on estrogen mediated effects on immunity, inflammation, arthritis and inflammation triggered osteoporosis.

My main topic is to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which estrogen downregulates arthritis and preserves bone loss during systemic and local inflammation. Since long-term exposure to estrogen has certain side effects in humans selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM) are tested in animal models for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In future clinical trails these drugs will be used for treatment of postmenopausal RA patients.
